Public education and involvement is very important to the success of the project. Toward that end, we have had several workshops and had numerous meetings with residents and business owners in the Pocket area.

Property owners along the Manatee Pocket gather for a workshop on private dredging. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection and Martin County partnered to help explain the how-to, who's who, and a checklist for what to do in the Private Dredging process. April 18, 2007
Martin County hosted the second public meeting on the Manatee Pocket Project. The meeting was from 6 to 8 PM at the Wolfe Center in the Indian River Community College in Stuart, Florida.


March 26, 2007
Project team members participate in a Stakeholders meeting with representatives of the Yacht and Country Club of Stuart to discuss their specific issues and concerns with the project.


March 12, 2007
Kathy FitzPatrick of Martin County and Richard Czlapinski of Tetra Tech discuss the Manatee Pocket Project at the monthly Republican Luncheon meeting at the Ramada Inn in Stuart. The theme of the meeting is Rivers and included a discussion of the Rivers Coalition law suite against the US Army Corps of Engineers regarding damaging discharges from Lake Okeechobee into the St Lucie River.


March 2, 2007
Initial discussions begin with the economics consulting firm of Fishkind & Associates. They are charged with the development of a methodology to assess a portion of the costs related to the dredging project to different groups of property owners that is fair, equitable and reasonable under Florida law.


February 15, 2007
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection issues the first Request for Additional Information (RAI) on the permit application submitted on January 17, 2007. The RAI includes a relatively small number of questions. The project team is reviewing the RAI and preparing a response to the specific questions that will be submitted to FDEP by the end of March.
