FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Dredging of the Manatee Pocket to begin on Thursday
Boaters asked to use caution near dredging areas
Stuart, Fla. - July 14, 2010 - On Thursday, July 15, construction will finally begin as part of the much-anticipated Manatee Pocket dredging project in Port Salerno. As construction begins on Thursday, boaters are asked to use caution in the main channel of the Manatee Pocket, just outside of Crooked Creek. At that time, vessel access will be restricted to Crooked Creek, Mariner’s Cay and adjacent areas in the main channel. Boaters need to follow directional signs and use VHF Channel 16 for communication.
As dredging progresses, restricted areas will shift until the entire project is complete. Additional information and updates on the dredging progress will be available on the Manatee Pocket’s project website at www.manateepocketproject.com or call the project information line at 1-800-580-9149
More than 280,000 cubic yards of sediment will be removed from the Pocket in order to create a 100-ft. channel that will improve navigation and marine environment in the Pocket and its tributaries. "After more than six years of planning, we are thrilled to finally begin dredging," Martin County Coastal Engineer Kathy FitzPatrick said. "We are asking for patience as the dredge navigates through the Pocket and creates intervals of limited access. We look forward to the final outcome that will improve navigation and will provide economic and environmental enhancements."
